You already know about working with robots and through machines. Many of you have also heard of artificial intelligence. But, do you ever wonder what the actuality behind AI is? Why it is called artificial intelligence? How it came into being? Well, surely many of you don’t know about this.
This article is going to disclose some hidden interesting facts and everything about AI which you don’t know yet. But, before going further, it is of prime importance to highlight the major difference between machine learning and artificial intelligence. Many people tangled the definitions of both.
But the chief difference between the two is that machine learning is a process by which a computer is programmed to solve a problem whereas artificial intelligence is a process in which a computer is programmed to automatically generate as many solutions as possible to a single problem. Or else we can say that a computer thinks for itself without being programmed to every single task.
What is AI?
Artificial Intelligence is basically a task performed by a program or a machine. For instance, if a human has to complete a task he had to apply intelligence to accomplish it. It is an intelligence system created by humans to complete them through artificial means and hence are called Artificial Intelligence.
There are obviously many broad definitions over which many people argue that whether something is truly AI or not. We can see AI doing tasks that are extended to almost every field, be it – planning, learning, reasoning, problem-solving, perception, motion, manipulation, knowledge, and representation. To a lesser extent, we can count creativity and social intelligence as well.
Everything About AI
The master craftsman Pamela McCorduck writes “Artificial Intelligence began with an ancient wish to forge the gods”. If we talk about the very beginning of AI, we should look back to antiquity. Yes, I’m actually talking about the ancient times where historians found robots appear in the myths of many ancient societies including Greek, Arabic, Egyptian, and Chinese.
Classical philosopher attempted to define the course of human thinking as the mechanical manipulation of symbols and signs are the father of modern AI. Nowadays, the arena of AI is more vibrant than ever and many people have a strong belief that the nations are going on the threshold of discoveries that can shape their development irreversibly, for worse or better.
Basic Types of AI
At a very high level, artificial intelligence has two main branches as Narrow AI and General AI.
Narrow AI: It is now common in every computer. It is the type of intelligent system that has been taught or learned to complete some specific tasks without being programmed. Unlike humans, these are programmed to do specific tasks and hence are called Narrow AI. It is broadly used in:
- Speech and language recognition of the Siri virtual assistant
- The Vision recognition system of self-driving cars
- Recommendation engines suggesting you products as per your interest
- Interpreting video feeds from drones
- Organizing personal and business calendars
- Responding to simple customer-service queries
- Coordinating with other intelligent systems
- Helping radiologists to spot potential tumours
- Flagging inappropriate contents
- Compatible with IoT devices
And the list goes on.
General AI: It is very different from narrow AI and is pretty similar to what intelligence found in humans. It is a flexible form of system which is capable of learning on its own. It is pro in carrying out vast tasks, like anything from haircutting to building spreadsheets.
It is based on a wide variety of topics as per its accumulated experience. In movies like The Terminator or Skynet, we can see the fierce mechanism of General AI in them. It doesn’t exist today but AI experts have projected that soon it will become a reality.
Uses of AI
AI is globally spread to every place. It is vigorously used in every field from smaller to larger and singular to multiple. We are so immune to it that we cannot realize that we are playing with artificial intelligence. If we try to pack the widespread uses of AI into a box, we may end up either exploding the box or using a bigger one.
It is immensely using in
- Amazon Alexa
- Apple’s Siri
- Detecting credit card fraud
- Spotting a spam
- Facial recognition
- Market analysis and data mining
- Portfolio management
- Heavy industry
- Hospitals and medicine
- Human resources and recruiting
- Media and e-commerce
- Online and telephone customer service
- News, publishing, and writing
- Telecommunications maintenance
And the list never ends.
AI By the End of the Century
AI researcher Vincent C Muller and philosopher Nick Bostrom conducted a survey in 2012-13 among four groups of experts. According to the findings, there is a 50 percent chance that Artificial General Intelligence (AGI) will be developed in the period between 2040 – 2050 which will rise to 90 percent by 2075.
Bostrom defined this as an intellectual system that exceeds the rational behaviour of humans virtually and it is expected to happen some 30 years after the achievement of AGI.
Whereas, some other experts believe that the use of the human brain is still limited and that we need to wait centuries to actually see AGI achievement.
If saying this, “We are going to become computerized” then certainly it is a true saying; but to some extent. The situation could be vice-versa and we can be near to viruses. This all depends on how AI will take over humans.
It will be again or painful situation if AI is spread over humans.
Now see what the next decade will bring in AI.
