How You Can Format SD Card On Mac book
Nowadays, most people think that it is petty to format an SD card on Mac or even if they are using a micro SD card. But it to equally important for you to format it before handing it over to another person to keep your data secure in your hands only.
It is quite easy and quick to format the SD card on Mac through the Disk Utility application. You need to insert your card in the SD card slot at your mac.
Format SD Card on Mac via Disk Utility
Before getting into this topic, you need to have a secure backup or transfer the data somewhere so you won’t have to worry about formatting it. A good thing is that you don’t need to have any specific app to erase the data.
Thanks to the Mac operating system to include everything you need right in your hand. Now, here starts the process through which you can format your SD card on mac.
Connect SD Card to Mac
There are several ways to connect your SD card to Mac. Some Macs come with a built-in SD card slot but others are not. If you are having one with the card slot then your card directly inserts into it.
If you have a micro SD card then you need to put the SD card into an adapter cartridge and then insert this cartridge into the SD card slot on your Mac. A USB card reader can also be used for this purpose.

Open Disk Utility Application
You don’t need to install or download the Disk Utility as it is a built-in application in the Mac OS X operating system.
- Go to the Applications folder and then Utilities where you can see Disk Utility.
- You can also use Spotlight to search it in your Mac folders.
Identify SD Card
In the Disk utility left side, there is a list of several drives installed in your Mac with all the internal and external drives. The SD card on mac will be shown up in the External section.
The card might have the name “Untitled” or “No Name” if it is not formatted before. You can also see the storage of your SD card by clicking on it. Make sure that the storage you see on the screen is the same as the SD card.
For instance, if your card is 64GB but you see 1TB on the screen, it means that you have selected the wrong drive.
Select Erase Option
There is an “Erase” option at the top bar of the functions. Once you select this option, there will be a popup warning for you about the deletion of your SD card on Mac.
Enter Card Name
In the popup window, you will have to enter the name assigned to your SD card. This is an optional step for the convenience to display a friendly name whenever you view it. It is equally good if you leave it as “Untitled” or “No Name”.
Note: Keep the SD card name simple and short like CARD PRO or SD CARD.
Choose the File System Format
You have multiple options under the Format drop-down menu. It depends on your SD card’s storage size to choose the appropriate option.
- Choose ExFAT for the SD card 64GB or higher storage.
- Choose MS-DOS (FAT32) for the 32GB or smaller storage.
When you tap on the Erase button, you will get a notification that it is mounting which takes few moments to complete the process. Once it is done, your SD card on the mac is successfully formatted and it is ready to use elsewhere.
Format SD Card on Mac via SD Card For the matter
There is another method to format SD cards on mac that involves downloading a free SD card for the matter. It is provided by the SD Association and is quite handy and quick.
